INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION ON COSMETICS SAFETY

The International Collaboration on Cosmetics Safety (ICCS) has an engaged science team working with ICCS member companies/organizations and other external collaborators. ICCS Science projects are aligned with the overall strategic goal of developing new approach methodologies (NAMs) and next generation risk assessment (NGRA) frameworks for cosmetics and ingredient safety assessments that will be protective of human and environmental health. These projects are peer reviewed by our external Science Advisory Committee and then approved by the member committee responsible for the science pillar within the mission of ICCS.

All ICCS Science Projects adhere to the strategic goal of:

  • Develop robust NAMs and NGRA frameworks.
  • Maintain a balanced project portfolio for continued deliverables.
  • Focus projects on cosmetics safety at all stages of the product pipeline: screening / prioritization to regulatory decision-making.
  • Collaborate with all major groups within ICCS to ensure project deliverables fulfill appropriate regulatory needs.

FROM GUIDANCE INTO APPLICATION

Turning Best Practice into Practice

ICCS released its Best Practice Guidance Document – Skin Sensitization Assessment: Using New Approach Methods for Substances in Cosmetics and Personal Care Products in July 2025 to support the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) for skin sensitization safety assessment. The guidance document has been positively received by regulators and safety assessors and represents a key step toward robust, animal-free decisions.
